Energy Usage of a Direct Exchange Geothermal Heating and Cooling System

In October of 2004 we moved into our newly built home in Vineland NJ. During the planning phase we elected to use a Geothermal heating and cooling system. The basic concept is the system uses the constant temperature of the earth (about 53 degrees) to heat and cool the house. The benefits are significant cost savings and minimal environmental impact.

Our house is approximately 2,350 square feet. We chose a Direct Exchange- Closed Loop system from ECR Technologies. We chose Hoffman Mechanical to install the 4 ton, horizontal loop system. We also had our goethermal system metered so we could monitor the energy usage and the costs of heating and cooling the house. Those results bring us to this page.

The cost of installing the system was about $26,000, including the ductwork. This was about $16,000 above the cost of a gas heating and standard a/c unit. We qualified for a $2,400 rebate from the Vineland Electric Utility. Our house was built by O'Rourke Construction.
